[FF#07] How I built my email list to my first 100 subscribers

Welcome back to Freestyle Friday where I share one actionable tip, strategy, or tactic to help you build your business online and get one step closer to creating your Freestyle Lifestyle.

Today I’m going to share with you how I built up my email list to my first 100 subscribers.

Before we dive into the tactical.

Let’s talk about the foundation for building your email list.

Foundation

In order for us to create an email list that is effective in building a relationship with people, it’s important that we start with the end in mind.

What I mean is, we need to identify exactly who we want to attract to our email list.

I don’t want to build an email list of complete random freebie seekers who opt into my email list just to get the freebie and then bounce…

No thank you.

I’m in it for the long haul.

I prefer Quality over Quantity.

So my end goal is to build a relationship with my email list.

A relationship so close that everytime I decide to put an offer together that serves my market, people on my email list will buy the offer just because my name is on it.

So how do we do that?

We start with identifying the market we want to serve.

Market

Our market will come from from the the big 3

  1. Health
  2. Wealth
  3. Relationships

Once we identify which of the big 3 we want to play in, then we can dial it in further to a niche and then a sub-niche.

Here’s the market I want to serve.

Market → Wealth

Niche → Email Marketing

Sub-niche → Creators and Business Coaches

I want to serve a market that makes use of my skills as a copywriter and chat closer and be able to serve people who don’t have those skills.

Gary Halbert (one of the greatest copywriters of all time) had a great phrase for this, he says he wanted to market to “Players with Money”

i.e. people who can afford to buy his services but were just unaware of the solution.

An unsophisticated market.

Next up:

Create a Lead Magnet

Once we’ve identified the market we want to serve, next we need to create a bait (lead magnet) to attract them.

Do a bit of research on what your market is currently spending money on.

Doing a bit of research for coaches and creators, I found that building an email list is something they are currently buying courses on and investing in services for.

So this is a problem that I want to solve for them and offer my copywriting services to solve.

I also found that coaches and creators are having a hard time monetizing their audiences.

They’ve taken the time to build up an audience on their social platforms but haven’t been able to figure out how to turn their audience into moolah.

So I created an offer to help coaches and creators monetize their audiences with my copywriting services.

I wrote a short guide on the Phoneless Sales Process I learned when I worked for a social media influencer to attract my market into my email list.

You can check that out here:

https://freestyleyourlifestyle.com/psp

Once we have those foundations down.

Next, we can dive into the tactical.

Sign up for an Email Service Provider

An email service provider (ESP) is where you start to build your list.

There are many out there, like ConvertKit, Aweber, Beehiv, ActiveCampaign, GetResponse…

The functionality of each software is different, just take the time to learn how to build a list, do broadcasts, and create sequences.

A couple of sequences you want to write is:

  1. Welcome Email
  2. Welcome Sequence

Create a Landing Page and a Thank You Page

A landing page is where people opt into your email list in order to join your email list.

The thank you page is directly after they opt in, where ideally you have another offer where people can work closer with you.

Once those are set up, next up is getting traffic.

Traffic

There are two ways to get traffic to your landing page.

  1. Organic
  2. Paid Ads

The first way is organic traffic can be built by building up an audience on social media and directing them to your opt in link.

It takes time to build an audience but if you have the time, it can be effective if you have a clear strategy for building up an audience on social media.

The second way to get traffic is by purchasing it through paid ads.

Meta Ads, YouTube Ads, LinkedIn Ads etc.

Once you have your lead magnet and landing page set up, all you have to do is create ads and send them to your landing page link.

Building a Relationship with your Email List

Building a relationship with the people on your email list comes down to frequency.

Frequency builds Familiarity.

Familiarity builds Liking.

And liking is one of the psychology triggers Dr. Robert Cialdani, author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion mentions it as a way to influence other people.

So if you’re serious about building an email list, realize that it is a slow burn.

It will take time to build a relationship with people on your email list.

So pick an email frequency that you can stick with.

Minimum, 3x a week. Ideally, daily.

And that’s about it.

I used this strategy to build up to my first 100 email subscribers to my email list.

Hope it helps you to start and build your own!

My wins for the week:

-Created a new opt in page to attract business coaches and creators to my email list

-Set up all of the assets I mentioned above

-Created ads to start driving paid traffic to my list

-Got back into the swing of writing a Weekly Newsletter

[FF#06] 4 Simple Steps to an Effective Promotion

What’s going on,

Welcome back to Freestyle Friday where I share one actionable tip, strategy, or tactic to help you leverage your time and get one step closer to creating your Freestyle Lifestyle.

This week, let’s focus on a very important skill that I think is extremely undervalued.

Developing the skill of Promotion.

i.e. Learning how to sell.

After all, if you have the greatest product or service in the world but no one knows about it…

What’s the point?

Let’s dive in.

Promoting and selling online boils down to 4 things.

  1. Knowing who your ideal audience is
  2. Qualifying to see if they are someone you can help
  3. Creating an irresistible offer
  4. Inviting them to buy

Your Ideal Audience

Knowing who your ideal audience is makes promoting so much easier.

For example:

Let’s say you have the greatest, juiciest steak made from the freshest ingredients in the world.

But you were promoting your steak to an audience of Vegans.

There’s nothing you could offer that audience to get them to buy your steak.

They are simply the wrong audience for your product.

However, if you are offering your steak to an audience of carnivores who love a nice juicy steak.

You could add mashed potatoes, a complimentary drink, and delicious dessert to make the offer more appealing.

Qualifying

I learned a handy little tool called the 6-boxes of qualifying when I was working with a social media influencer chat closing information products.

Here’s how it went:

  1. Situation
  2. Missing
  3. Gap
  4. Need
  5. Priority
  6. Fit

The first step to qualifying is asking questions to determine what they’re current situation is and where they want to go.

We need to find out more about what they are missing in their current situation to get from where they currently are and where they want to go.

That missing piece for them is the gap – where they are and where they want to go.

Once we establish that, we know that there is a need for what we offer.

Next up is determining how much of a priority it is for them to solve their problem.

Is this something they are looking to do immediately or a year from now?

Asking the simple question of, how soon were you looking to get this fixed?

Will give you an idea of how much of a priority solving this problem for them is right now.

Last but not least, fit.

We have the final say in who we decide we want to work with.

So based on the conversation and asking questions for someone, we can say that we would love to help them solve their X problem or just refer them to someone else that they might be a better fit for.

No amount of money is worth the headaches that taking on the wrong customer.

I’ve had numerous sales in my career that I wish I didn’t make because the customer was a nightmare to work with and I usually got a feel for it before we closed a the initial deal.

Irresistible Offer

An offer is simply, “You give me ____ and I’ll give you ____”

We want our offer to be so irresistible that it makes someone feel silly for saying no to.

Elements of an Irresistible offer

  • The value is 5-10x the price
  • Low to no risk for the client
  • Clearly define what you do and how it helps them achieve what they want

We can add the SMART model to make your offer irresistible.

S – Smart

M – Measurable

A – Action Based

R – Results Oriented

T – Time Bount

Add in a guarantee and it’ll make your offer incredibly difficult to say no to.

Structure of an Irresistible Offer:

I’ll help you [get more of a specific, measurable thing they want] in as little as [timeframe] and [guarantee]

For example here’s one of my Irresistible Offers:

I’ll help you get 10-50 more students for your high ticket offer in as little as 30 days or I’ll continue to work with you until you do.

That offer makes it irresistible for coaches with high- ticket programs to not at least check out what I have to offer and take me up on it.

Invitation

The last part of the promotion process is making an invite to your prospect.

Another way this is said is Asking for the Sale.

But I prefer a much less pressure way to do this by just making a simple invitation to join or decline the offer.

Quick story:

When I was selling high ticket backyard products at a sales job my invitation/ ask for the sale was this phrase:

“Was this something you’re thinking about doing today or just looking for a quote?”

This question gave me insight into how much of a priority it was for the customer and if they needed time to think it over.

They would contact me when they were ready to buy, which would usually be a few days, a week later or even later that same day since they didn’t feel pressured to make a decision.

I would make a lot more sales by leaving the ball in their court but giving them the option to buy and contact me when they were ready.

Giving people the option to buy when they are ready is one of the skills I learned at that job that has served me in my own business as well.

That wraps it up for this episode of Freestyle Friday.

[FF#05] 3 simple secrets to grow a following…

Welcome back to Freestyle Friday where I share one actionable tip, strategy, or tactic to help you build your online business and get one step closer to creating your Freestyle Lifestyle.

Let’s dive into it.

Building a following doesn’t have to be complicated.

With so much noise out there on the interwebs, it can be difficult to figure out what actually works.

The first thing we need to understand when we’re building a following is:

Do Something Worthy of Being Followed

That means doing something noteworthy.

Quit a corporate job for the first time…

Built a full-time income from home…

Got the attention of a 7-figure entrepreneur…

Publish a book…

One mistake is thinking that it needs to be something big and grand.

That’s not the case.

Quick story:

Back in college, I started picking up breakdancing because I just thought it’d be a fun skill to learn.

I wasn’t Battle worthy yet, but I put in the work to learn one Freeze.

The baby freeze.

Here’s what it looks like:

I wasn’t doing headspins, flares, windmills or all the flashy things that you see breakers do.

I put in the work and mastered that one freeze.

And because of that, I was able to teach it to a friend

and was super proud when she got it!

Back to it:

If you want to build a following, work towards learning and practicing one skill.

Once you get results from it, then you can teach it.

A lot of marketers on the interwebs think that just the information alone will help them get results, but forget that knowledge without application is useless.

Just a bunch of wasted time and effort regurgitating what they learned in a course.

Bruce Lee once said that “Applied knowledge is power.”

Completely true when it comes to building a following too.

Next up:

Post Content

Not just any random content, content that your target audience would be interested in.

Here’s a quick way to do that:

Post content about the problems and insecurities that your target audience is facing.

If you share stories and can describe a problem someone is going through better than they can,

They will think that you have the solution to their problem and reach out.

You’ll never bore your audience if you talk about the problems they’re going through.

For example:

My son had a speech delay and we didn’t identify it until he was around 3 years old.

When we discovered that…

I couldn’t get enough of researching it, learning more about it and finding people on facebook who had kids that faced the same problem.

I opted into lists and found people on social media that talked about it.

And got the help that he needed.

Moving on:

Engage your audience

Probably the most overlooked secret to growing an audience.

People miss the whole point of social media and that is to be SOCIAL.

If you’re posting content all day and aren’t getting any responses or comments, ask yourself this simple question:

Are you engaging back?

Posting all the time is the equivalent of having a chat with someone and they are only talking about themselves.

That gets boring.

So engage back with people, ask follow up questions, and be interested in what they have to say.

Read How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Without a large following for yourself yet, engage with leaders audiences that have your target audience in it.

Be helpful with your comments and people will naturally want to check out your profile and content.

That wraps it up for this week of Freestyle Friday.

Go forth and take action to grow your following to create your Freestyle Lifestyle.

[FF#04] The 7 Ps of Creating Compelling Content

Welcome back to Freestyle Friday where I share one actionable tip, strategy, or tactic to help you build your online business and get one step closer to creating your Freestyle Lifestyle.

To create compelling content online…

First, we have to define our target audience and dive deep into their desires.

Since I’ve been binge watching Lucifer on Netflix lately, this question is timely…

In my best Lucifer voice:

“Tell me, what is it that you truly desire?”

When you understand what that desire is for your target audience…

It’s much simpler to create content for them.

Your Target Audience

Think of your target audience as you just a few years ago…

What is a problem that you’ve been able to overcome in the last couple years that you can teach to someone?

Here are a few questions to ponder about when defining your target audience:

-Who are they?

-What do they call themselves?

-Where are they now? (current situation)

-Where do they want to be? (desired situation)

-What’s holding them back from getting there? (obstacles)

Audience Desires

There’s an exercise I learned from one of my mentors Sean Anthony about mapping out your audience’s pain island and their pleasure island.

With steps in between to go from Pain Island to Pleasure Island.

And the obstacles, they need to overcome to get there.

Here are the 7 Ps:

  1. Person
  2. Pain
  3. Pleasure Island
  4. Promise
  5. Process
  6. Pillars
  7. Personal Story

Here is an example of one for one of my offers:

Person:

Experts and Coaches with high-ticket offers

Pain Island:

Not making the money they want because they are capped working 1on1

Pleasure Island:

Making the money they want working with a leveraged system to get students.

Promise:

Enroll more students for your coaching program

without paid ads, webinars, funnels or sales calls in as little as 30 days

Process:

Clarity on Audience

Clear on Specific Offer

Handraiser/5130

Qualify Through Chat

Enroll Interested People

Pillars of my Solution:

  1. Get people to respond to social posts/emails/story videos
  2. Qualify those interested through chat
  3. Simple Tech to Enroll into Coaching Program

Personal Story:

I worked with social media influencers, authors, coaches and speakers promoting their group coaching programs through Instagram.

Helped one account make $491k in sales in one month in the middle of the pandemic and I can teach you the same process for your coaching offer so you don’t have to spend all day on sales calls.

Once you have these 7Ps mapped out…

Create short and long form content posts to attract your target audience.

That wraps it up for this Freestyle Friday episode.

[FF#03] 3 High-Income Skills

Welcome back to Freestyle Friday where I share one actionable tip, strategy, or tactic to help you build your online business and get one step closer to creating your Freestyle Lifestyle.

This week I’m going to share with you 3 high income skills I learned when I worked as a chat closing agent for a social media influencer.

A high-income skill is a leveraged skill that allows you to get paid more in the marketplace.

Here are the 3 high income skills I discovered:

1. Copywriting

The dictionary defines copywriting as the activity of writing the text of advertisements or publicity material.

Here’s how I define it:

Words That Sell

If you can learn the words that sell, you can leverage this skill to promote your own offers

Or if you want to freelance… promote offers for other businesses.

In the online world, this skill is incredibly valuable as more and more people move to the E-Learning space to learn skills.

Something to ponder:

According to Forbes The E-Learning industry will grow to a $325 billion dollar industry by 2025

If you want to learn how to apply this to email…

I’d recommend checking out my 7 Day Persuasive Email Challenge here

Where you’ll learn the invisible structure of a sales email.

2. Closing

Closing as defined by the dictionary is the process of making a sale.

At the end of the day, it’s about collecting a decision once someone is presented with an offer.

I’ve been in sales for most of my career and there are 3 simple rules to follow.

3 Rules of Selling

  1.  People don’t like the idea of being sold
  2.  People buy things for emotional not rational reasons
  3.  Once sold people need to justify their emotional decisions with logic

3. Speaking

Speaking is a high income skill that’s amplified by your ability to know the words that sell (i.e. copywriting) and know how to close.

Speaking influentially will amplify your other high-income skills and feeds into a loop.

Copywriting influences closing.

Closing influences speaking.

And speaking influentially amplifies your copywriting ability.

[FF#02] How to stand out like a sore thumb online

Welcome back to another issue of Freestyle Friday!

Where I’ll be sharing with you one resource, strategy or actionable tip to help you develop the skills you need to create your Freestyle Lifestyle.

Since we touched on the 5 simple moves of creating a Freestyle Lifestyle last week…

Let’s dive deeper into the first Move…

Personal Brand

According to Gary Vee:

“It’s important to build a personal brand because it’s the only thing you’re going to have.

Your reputation online and in the new business world is pretty much the game, so you’ve gotta be a good person.

You can’t hide anything and more importantly, you’ve gotta be out there at some level.”

To stand out in the treacherous red sea of the interwebs…

Your unique personality is your very best weapon.

But first we need to identify what your core values are and how we can use them to stand out online.

I hired a Branding Coach who worked with large brands you would find in your closet, cupboards, and the coffee you drink.

But you don’t have to spend the moolah for coaching like I did to figure it out (unless you want to…)

A Personal Brand boils down into 3 Elements:

  1. Who you are
  2. How you stand out
  3. How you make people feel

Let’s break this down.

Who you are?

The best way to figure out who you are and what your motivations are is to take a Brand Archetype test.

Think of it as a personality test for your personal brand.

Here’s a couple of resources you can check out for help with this:

Brand Archetype

Sparktype

How you stand out?

3 of my Core Values are:

*Freedom

*Creativity

*Growth

Working with my branding coach, she pulled it out for me and boiled my brand down to one word.

My ONE Word Brand is… FREESTYLE

It captures all of the elements of my personality that can be used to stand out on the internet.

There aren’t any Breakdancing Online Marketers that I know of out there.

If you’re having a hard time figuring out what your core values are that you can use for your personal brand…

I’d recommend checking out Julia Baxter’s (my Branding Coach)

Brand Foundation course here

It’s important to position yourself differently online.

And the best way to do that is to know what your values are so you can attract an audience that values the same things.

How you make people feel?

When people see my personal brand online…

I want them to feel like my brand is something fun, passionate, bold, adventurous, expressive.

My mission is to empower entrepreneurs to use simple online marketing moves and fully express their talents to create a Freestyle Lifestyle.

If you take a look at large brands, you’ll see that there is a thread of values that they share.

For example:

One of my favorite clothing brands is Express

When you google Express Company Values…

Here’s what pops up:

Who We Are

“We are a fashion-forward apparel brand and style community whose purpose is to create confidence and inspire self-expression.

From wardrobe essentials to the latest trends, we outfit doers, makers, movers and shakers with clothing designed for real-life versatility.

At Express, we believe that everyone should dream big and dress accordingly.”

===

So how do you want to show up with your Personal Brand online?

Just answer those 3 questions, be unique, and express yourself

(no pun intended)

That about wraps it up for this week’s issue of Freestyle Friday.

Remember, we are the creators of our lives.

[FF#01] 5 Moves to Create Your Freestyle Lifestyle

This is going to be the first of a weekly series I’m putting out called Freestyle Friday where I’ll share one resource, strategy or actionable tip to help you develop the skills you need to create your Freestyle Lifestyle.

Diving into the online marketing industry after college, I had no clue where to start.

I took courses, bought books, invested in coaching, and made it to live events to be around other online marketers who created the lifestyle that I wanted.

But there was no simple blueprint to follow.

I’ve invested thousands of dollars into learning a different set of skills that was not taught in school and was able to boil it down into 5 simple steps:

  1. Create a Personal Brand
  2. Develop a High-Income “Move”
  3. Put out valuable Content
  4. Build a Following
  5. Learn how to Promote

Let’s take a closer look at each step:

  1. Creating a Personal Brand

A Personal Brand is how we can stand out in a crowded internet marketplace.

There are so many content creators screaming on the internet that are only regurgitating what they’ve seen online about what works but haven’t done it themselves.

Copies of copies and not original

If you want to stand out online, you have to be different.

And the best way to do that in my opinion is to use your unique personality.

If you’re unsure of how to use your personality to create your brand…

I recommend taking a Brand Archetype quiz:

https://archetypes.bigbam.cloud/

My primary brand archetype is Explorer and my secondary is Architect.

Which means that I am bold, adventurous and love challenges.

I also love creating things and inspiring others through my own experiences.

My Personal Brand is all about helping people create a Freestyle Lifestyle.

Having the freedom to express yourself through your lifestyle.

The message behind my personal brand is:

“Empowering creative entrepreneurs to use simple online marketing moves and fully express their talents to create Freestyle Lifestyle.”

And my tagline is:

Freestyle Your Lifestyle!

When you understand your brand archetype, you can use your personality to stand out in the treacherous red sea of the interwebs.

  1. Develop a high-income “Move”

During the pandemic, I worked with a social media influencer that taught me 3 high-income skills.

I call them ‘moves’ because I’m a dancer and I prefer using dance analogies.

Anyways.

The 3 high-income moves I learned working with him was:

  1. Copywriting
  2. Closing
  3. Speaking

These 3 skills feed off of each other.

If you learn copywriting…that helps with your closing, i

If you learn how to close…that helps with your speaking

If you learn how to speak influentially… you need to learn the words that sell i.e. copywriting.

If you’re just starting out…

I’d recommend learning Copywriting first.

You can learn how to create your very first sales email with my Persuasive Email Challenge here.

Once you know the words that sell, it will influence the other high income moves.

3. Put out Valuable Content

Valuable content depends on your audience and your personal values.

Start by first identifying who it is you want to serve and how you can help them.

Create content around what they want and how you can help them solve a specific problem.

For example:

I have a copywriting service where I help coaches get more students for their programs with just a few simple social posts, a google doc, and simple DM conversations.

No webinars, ads, funnels, or sales calls needed.

For coaches that are struggling to get students and spending all day on sales calls, this offer solves that problem and helps them leverage their time.

  1. Build a Following

Building a following is just identifying a group of people that have a similar problem you would like to help.

If you’re a dad who put on a few extra pounds after having kids and you put in the work to get rid of the ‘dad bod’ you can build a following of dads who want to be able to do the same.

And you would just share what you did to get that result.

  1. Learn how to Promote

Put another way…

Learn how to market

Marketing and sales skills are important if you want to learn how to build an online business and create a Freestyle Lifestyle.

You can have the best product or service in the world, but it’s all for nothing if no one knows about it.

So develop your marketing chops and learn how to promote.

That about wraps it up for this first Freestyle Friday.
